When a mild reservation about the package is still a good sign

Why naming one honest concern in a negotiation often builds more trust than relentless enthusiasm.

Handshake after a measured negotiation conversation

Candidates sometimes believe every minute of a salary talk must sound delighted. In practice, hiring managers often trust someone who can name one specific concern — commuting cost, vacation days, or bonus opacity — while still showing interest in the role.

Keep the reservation specific

“I’m still weighing the remote-day limit against the base salary” is clearer than “I’m not sure about the whole package.” Specificity invites a concrete reply.

Pair it with a preference

State what would resolve the concern. That turns hesitation into a negotiation move rather than vague doubt.

Rehearse the tone

In salary negotiation preparation we practise this once out loud. The goal is neither aggression nor apology — just a steady sentence you can deliver without rushing.
